THE QUESTION that CHANGED MY LIFE
-by David Ryser
A number of years ago, I had the privilege of teaching at a school
of ministry. My students were hungry for God, and I was constantly
searching for ways to challenge them to fall more in love with
Jesus and to become voices for revival in the Church. I came across
a quote attributed most often to Rev. Sam Pascoe. It is a short
version of the history of Christianity, and it goes like this:
Christianity started in Palestine as a fellowship; it moved to Greece
and became a philosophy; it moved to Italy and became an institution;
it moved to Europe and became a culture; it came to America and
became an enterprise. Some of the students were only 18 or 19
years old–barely out of diapers–and I wanted them to understand
and appreciate the import of the last line, so I clarified it by adding,
“An enterprise. That’s a business.” After a few moments Martha,
the youngest student in the class, raised her hand. I could not
imagine what her question might be. I thought the little vignette was
self-explanatory, and that I had performed it brilliantly. Nevertheless,
I acknowledged Martha’s raised hand, “Yes, Martha.” She asked
such a simple question, “A business? But isn’t it supposed to be
a body?” I could not envision where this line of questioning was going,
and the only response I could think of was, “Yes.” She continued,
“But when a body becomes a business, isn’t that a prostitute?”
The room went dead silent. For several seconds no one moved or
spoke. We were stunned, afraid to make a sound because the
presence of God had flooded into the room, and we knew we were
on holy ground. All I could think in those sacred moments was,
“Wow, I wish I’d thought of that.” I didn’t dare express that thought
aloud. God had taken over the class.
Martha’s question changed my life. For six months, I thought about
her question at least once every day. “When a body becomes a
business, isn’t that a prostitute?” There is only one answer to her
question. The answer is “Yes.” The American Church, tragically,
is heavily populated by people who do not love God. How can we
love Him? We don’t even know Him; and I mean really know Him.
… I stand by my statement that most American Christians do not
know God–much less love Him. The root of this condition originates
in how we came to God. Most of us came to Him because of what
we were told He would do for us. We were promised that He would
bless us in life and take us to heaven after death. We married Him
for His money, and we don’t care if He lives or dies as long as we
can get His stuff. We have made the Kingdom of God into a business,
merchandising His anointing. This should not be. We are commanded
to love God, and are called to be the Bride of Christ–that’s pretty
intimate stuff. We are supposed to be His lovers. How can we love
someone we don’t even know? And even if we do know someone,
is that a guarantee that we truly love them? Are we lovers or
prostitutes?
I was pondering Martha’s question again one day, and considered
the question, “What’s the difference between a lover and a prostitute?”
I realized that both do many of the same things, but a lover does
what she does because she loves. A prostitute pretends to love, but
only as long as you pay. Then I asked the question, “What would
happen if God stopped paying me?”
For the next several months, I allowed God to search me to uncover
my motives for loving and serving Him. Was I really a true lover of
God? What would happen if He stopped blessing me? What if He
never did another thing for me? Would I still love Him? Please
understand, I believe in the promises and blessings of God. The
issue here is not whether God blesses His children; the issue is
the condition of my heart. Why do I serve Him? Are His blessings
in my life the gifts of a loving Father, or are they a wage that I have
earned or a bribe/payment to love Him? Do I love God without any
conditions? It took several months to work through these questions.
Even now I wonder if my desire to love God is always matched by
my attitude and behavior. I still catch myself being disappointed
with God and angry that He has not met some perceived need in
my life. I suspect this is something which is never fully resolved,
but I want more than anything else to be a true lover of God.
So what is it going to be? Which are we, lover or prostitute?
There are no prostitutes in heaven, or in the Kingdom of God for
that matter, but there are plenty of former prostitutes in both
places. Take it from a recovering prostitute when I say there is no
substitute or unconditional, intimate relationship with God. And I
mean there is no palatable substitute available to us (take another
look at Matthew 7:21-23 sometime). We must choose.

I believe I’ve seen that woman in the pulpit at my local UCC.
Outstanding! I haven’t been to a church yet who doesn’t seem to fall into the prostitute condition. Now days, most folks seem to be in that category. I’m working on that problem myself. I too want to love God as He wants me to, also. It’s easier said than done, but I’m working on it.
Thanks for the story!!!
Thanks, that’s excellent!!
The American church is the problem? The problem in other countries seems to be that no one goes to any church at all. Should we be more like Europe then? Should we have state-run churches that care nothing about God but political correctness? Should we build more UN Chapels and worship the God og world government?
Excellent insight. The question does come down to “Do I love God”.
How do I express the love that I have for God? If I do not love my neighbor as myself, who I can see, how can I say that I love God, who I cannot see? If I say I love God, won’t I do what He says? If I cannot/will not do what He says, can I really say that I love God? How can I DO what He says if I don’t even KNOW what He says?
I do not argue against the fact that much of American Christianity has prostituted itself out. However the so-called short history is a massively ignorant over simplification of Church history. Fact is when one takes the time to learn the history of the Christian people it’s truly miraculous, and builds our faith, trust, and love of God.
The writer sounds like a jealous foreigner. God loves America the most and it make all the other people crazy. Our church is run like a finely tuned business machine, unlike those “State” religions in other countries. We’ve got Joel, John, Pat and Jerry in our corner, who’s looking out for those losers in foreign lands??? NOBODY..that’s who. $50,000 for the Rapture? Heck it’s worth 10 times more than that.
God loves America…..so get over it. Y’all are going to hell.
Here, try this one on for size you foreign LOSERS!

There is a reason that the Holy Bible is written in english!
Very thought-provoking article, and I love the image. It’s true there are churches in the US that are nothing more than businesses, growing and taking in more and more money. It is also true that some people call on God for what He can do for them. I don’t think we should generalize and lump all churches together though.
There are many devoted Christians here in the US who devote their lives to God’s will, living by His Word, and being thankful for the valleys as well as the mountain top experiences.
Good analogy Dr. Ryser.
Anyone who is not spiritually deaf or blind knows that the majority of American institutions are mostly about business. These “non-profit” institutions that go by the name church have in the past made more money than alot of corporate American businesses.
Notice I used past tense in terms of money made. Why, because it is all crumbling before their eyes. The Lord has shut their finances, and shall continue to stop the flow of finances into these institutions who use His name for their gain. Understand that everything that can be shaken is being shaken, and shall continue to shake until that which was birthed ONLY by the Spirit of the living God remains standing. Do not, for a second think the church system is immune to the shaking. It is actually because of them, that the shaking started. Judgment always begins in the house of the Lord (the place where His name is being used in vain). The light has been turned on, and everything in the dark is being exposed and shall continue to be exposed since many leaders have refused to humble themselves under the mighty hands of the Lord and repent!
That said, the greed and prostitution issue is a world-wide problem, though it is more prevalent here in the States. American’s have taken that nasty greedy spirit to other countries, and other preachers have come here and learned that nasty American greed. Having said that, it is definitely more pravelent here (as stated earlier) than in most countries especially third world countries. There are a few bad apples everywhere even outside the USA since many actually came and learned the gimmicks and the tricks from here.
Having said all of that, yes, it takes money to preach and spread the gospel and the Lord understands that, but whoever He calls, chooses and sends, He the Lord Almighty equips. Is Jehovah not capable of moving on the hearts of man to give to His faithful servants/friends/sons/daughters when they preach the truth?
And I hear the Lord saying, where is the faith that many of these preacher preach from the pulpits?
You attempt to preach about faith, but do not practice it in your own lives.
You can not impart what you do not have. You can’t preach what you have not walked out yourself!!!
The resposibility of preachers is to preach the unadulterated word of God – Truth. You see, when it comes to anything pertaining to the Lord, it has to be Spirit-led all the way. Yes, including how the ministry is sustained, for it is not by might, nor by power but by My Spirit says the Lord of Hosts.
There are some good spirit-led, ungreedy churches, but if the truth be told, they are very few here. We have perverted the word of the Lord, we have put a price tag on that which is Spiritual and it is an abormination to the Lord, and the Lord is saying, REPENT!
May the Lord continue to bless His Church, His body and bring
down the counterfeits and the rebellious who refuse to repent.

I don’t go to church, any church. 99% of the churches and their leaders teach their congregants to reject the Torah, so I reject them!
Matthew 5:17-20: “Don’t think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill. For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the Torah, until all things are accomplished. Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and
teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, (Catholic priests, pastors, or reverends–my emphasis) there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.”
“Christianity started in Palestine as a fellowship”
Since there was no Palestine, wouldn’t it be Israel?
Bethlehem is in Israel, most of the highlights in the Bible are in Israel.
So why go with the muslim revision of history that they did everything first?
Going with muslim history Jesus was a muslim, even tho islam wasn’t around for another 750 years after Christ.
So how did Christianity start in Palestine?
or as Goebbles said “tell a lie enough times and the people will believe it”.
Wait just a moment!!!
My wife (she has schizophrenia,) and we moved from the city to our present Massachusetts location, and the townspeople have almost universally treated us badly, especially the Christians. One example, the wife of the Pastor at one church we went to told people that my wife had “an evil eye”. I have to say that after 30 years of marriage I still can’t see it. She’s wonderful. Both to me and also for God. And my wife helps me in my Christian walk very greatly.
And yes we go to church, we read the Bible each day and follow along with some online ministries.
We were once active in a Cambridge church (and a pretty good one too, in spite of the location.) And for years we were active in the BGEA.
And today we still are active as Christians, working with recovering alcoholics, etc.
So sure the American Christian church is in trouble. What does that mean for us? It means lot’s of home Bible studies, lot’s of online group Bible study, and lot’s of praying.
By the way, I see God’s plan being worked out for both my wife and myself. God hasn’t lost his touch. He is still in charge of each person. And His people still obey Him.
