The latest ruling from the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia says that the word “infidels” and “kafirs” should not be directed against lapsed Muslims like Barack Hussein Obama, who attended school in Jakarta as a Muslim, but at Christians and Jews who have failed to submit to the demands of Allah

Senior cleric and deputy chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama’s legal advisory board Masyhuri Naim said that Muslims are using these terms too lightly – - particularly in reference to fellow believers.

Mr. Obama and other Muslims who have turned from the teachings of the faith should be considered apostates, the senior cleric insisted.

The nation’s largest Islamic group discussed the matter at its congress in Makassar this week after receiving numerous reports of Muslims labeling other Muslims infidels as a means of attack.

“I have heard that people who do not wear a kopiah [Muslim skull cap] are called infidels. Muslims not growing their beards are called infidels. People are being declared kafirs and then attacked,” Mr. Naim said, adding that NU was greatly saddened to hear that members of the Ahmadiyah, a minority Muslim sect, had been assaulted many times and seen their mosques destroyed by those who called them infidels.

“Have you ever seen any NU followers attacking Ahmadiyah followers? No. We would never do that because the Prophet [Muhammad] would never use violence. We talk to people. The Prophet would never physically attack people because they were not Muslims,” Mr. Naimsaid, adding that there were several criteria to be met before someone could be called an infidel.

“God should be considered as the creator of the universe. Only God can punish us. To call someone an infidel who is actually a Muslim over small differences is forbidden by the Prophet. The Prophet has clearly instructed us that whosoever calls a Muslim an infidel, himself is the infidel,” Masyhuri said as quoted by the Jakarta Globe.

Violence, however, must be used against the real infidels since the Koran says: “Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them” (Koran 2: 191).

Nahdlatul Ulama is the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia with over 30 million members.

Its headquarters is in Jakarta, where Mr. Obama spent much of his childhood.

Florida Republican congressional hopeful Corey Poitier used the name “Buckwheat” during a speech on healthcare reform in an apparent reference to President Barack Obama

In his speech to Broward County Republicans Monday, Poitier, 36, who is the only Republican candidate running to fill the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, a Democrat, said, “Listen up, Buckwheat — this is not how it is done,” the Miami Herald reported.

“Buckwheat” is a character from the 1920s Our Gang and The Little Rascals, the Herald reported. The character is considered by many African-Americans to be disparaging.

“The press has run amok with this and turned me into a racist. I’ve never seen Buckwheat as a disparaging character. People love Buckwheat,” said Poitier, who is black.

In a related development, the findings of a Harris poll show that 25% of registered Republicans believe that Mr. Obama is the Anti-Christ.

Other findings in the online poll of 2,230 people conducted from March 1 through 8 are as follows:

Two thirds of Republicans — 67 percent — and 40 percent of Americans overall, believe that Obama is a socialist.

A majority of Republicans — 57 percent — and 32 percent overall believe that Obama is a Muslim.

45 percent of Republicans, and 25 percent overall, believe that Obama was “not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president.”

38 percent of Republicans, and 20 percent overall, say that Obama is “doing many of the things that Hitler did.”

“The very large numbers of people who believe all these things of President Obama help to explain the size and strength of the Tea Party Movement,” Harris Interactive says in a release.

Obama’s entrepreneurship summit’ for Muslims, while Americans go hungry.

The White House on Friday announced a “summit on entrepreneurship” to build economic ties with the Islamic world, part of President Barack Obama’s outreach to Muslims.

The White House said it has invited participants from more than 40 countries over five continents for the April 26-27 conference in Washington.

“The summit will highlight the role entrepreneurship can play in addressing common challenges while building partnerships that will lead to greater opportunity abroad and at home,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Obama first spoke of the entrepreneurship conference in his signature June 4 speech in Cairo to the Islamic world.

In the closely watched address, Obama said the United States was seeking a “new beginning” with the Islamic world to rebuild relations that had sharply deteriorated over the past decade.

Obama promised at the time that he would convene a “presidential summit on entrepreneurship” by the end of 2009.

He said that the meeting would “identify how we can deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and social entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world.”
