Libyan president Moammar Gadhafi has called upon Muslims throughout the world to engage in a holy war against Switzerland.
His summons for a new jihad came at an event commenorating the birth of the Prophet Mohammed.
President Gadhafi has been critical of Switzerland’s recent referendum which forbids the construction of minarets in the country. The referendum was approved in November by 57.5% of the Swiss voters.
When the news of the referendum was announced, President Gadhafi called Switzerland “an infidel, obscene state” that is destroying mosques and an “ideological enemy of Islam.”
The Libyan president was further outraged by the recent arrest of his son, Hannibal, and his daughter-in-law by Swiss officials on charges that they had assaulted two members of their household staff. The charges later were dropped.
“Let us wage jihad against Switzerland, Zionism and foreign aggression,” Gadhafi proclaimed. “Any Muslim in any part of the world who works with Switzerland is an apostate, is against Mohammed, God and the Koran.”
After Gadhafi’s son and daughter-in-law were arrested, Libya canceled oil supply contracts with Switzerland, withdrew billions of dollars from Swiss banks, denied visas to Swiss citizens and recalled some of its diplomats.
